Understanding Recycling in Montana

Montana, known for its stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife, also faces challenges when it comes to recycling. One of the main hurdles is the limited infrastructure for processing recyclables, leading to confusion among residents about what can and cannot be recycled. This lack of clarity often results in recyclable materials ending up in landfills, defeating the purpose of recycling.

Recycling in Montana has challenges that are not seen in other states.  We have a large geographical area but a fairly low population density. Because of this it is difficult to attract the needed infrastructure for recycling that other states have.

Knowledge is Power

Recycling is a challenge in Montana. The state's comparatively low population is cattered over a large geographic area. Compounding the issue is the distance to processors (industry) that use the recyclables as raw materials in their operations. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality is working hard to help citizens, businesses, and local and state agencies find solutions to make it easier and more affordable to recycle.
